Lews Castle & Museum nan Eilean

Lews Castle & Museum nan Eilean

Overlooking Stornoway harbour, Lews Castle was built in the mid-1800s by Sir James Matheson, who purchased the island of Lewis in 1844.

  • Once a private residence, later a wartime hospital and college

  • Gifted to the people of Lewis by Lord Leverhulme in 1923

  • Renovated and reopened as a museum, archive and accommodation

Museum nan Eilean, in a modern extension, includes six of the world-famous Lewis Chessmen on long-term loan from the British Museum, alongside fascinating displays about island life past and present.
